Recent scientific studies using modern auditory Event-Related Potential (ERP) technology have detected brainwave signatures for many neurological disorders.  The ERP brainwaves are “evoked” by presenting an auditory stimulus (a sound) and then measured as voltage potentials on the surface of the subject’s scalp as the brain processes the sounds.  Abnormal brainwave signatures can be identified and correlated with many neurological disabilities.

Neuronetrix has developed an easy-to-use ERP-based system for widespread, high-throughput screening of a variety of neurological disorders. The company’s, patent pending COGNISION™ System uses advanced micro-electronics integrated into a patient-friendly headset to automatically perform a variety of ERP tests.  An onboard microprocessor, remotely programmed through the internet, controls the administration of the test. When the tests are completed the screening data is uploaded to the company’s web-centric database management system for analysis.  A proprietary pattern recognition application called reCOGNISION is used to classify the patient’s brainwaves based on similarities to known neurological risk profiles.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY STRATEGY:

The COGNISION™ System is the culmination of Neuronetrix’s technical innovations in microelectronics, web-enabled sensor deployment, and pattern recognition methods. Nine patent applications relating to the COGNISION™ System have been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other patent protection agencies throughout the world. Over time, the proprietary database of ERP classifiers will become a significant core asset of the company.

COGNISION and HIPAA:

Congress enacted the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) legislation to ensure the portability, privacy, and security of individuals' medical information.  HIPAA is composed of multiple sections each of which has a required compliance implementation date.  The areas of the HIPAA regulations that are relevant to Neuronetrix, the COGNISION™ System, or Neuronetrix’ other products are found in Title II – Administrative Simplification, specifically the Privacy Standards with a compliance date of April 2003, and the Security and Electronic Signature Standards with a compliance date of April 2005.  Neuronetrix’ COGNISION™ System was developed from the bottom up to enable users of the system to meet current and future HIPAA requirements.

HIPAA is technology neutral and does not require any specific technologies to be implemented. The Microsoft® Windows 7/Server 2008 platform supplies the foundation for security and administration functionality along with the technologies needed to construct a secure technical environment.  The technical security services and mechanisms covered by Windows 7/Server 2008 include access controls both role-based and user based, audit controls for both system and security events, data and entity authentication in addition to communication and network controls.  Neuronetrix has implemented additional security features including hardware firewalls other software security tools to prevent unauthorized access from the internet.

From setting up user accounts to performing internal security audits, Neuronetrix can help our customers with the necessary information required for the technical and administrative safeguards that are put in place to protect the integrity, availability and confidentiality of subject information.  Neuronetrix is committed to partnering with our customers to ensure that their organization is HIPAA compliant.
